      Titles now

How Etsy wants titles written now.

Etsy has new guidance for titles. The checker flags the parts a program can see.

      • Name the item once, clearly, and put its key traits first: color, material, size.
      • Consider fewer than 15 words. Search engines show only about the first 50 to 60 characters, and Etsy search shows only the first few words.
      • Don't repeat words.
      • Move subjective words out, such as perfect or beautiful.
      • Leave out price, shipping and sale wording.
      • Mention a holiday, occasion or recipient only if it defines the item, and don't stack gift phrases.
      • Write for people. Punctuation can separate phrases, and where a phrase sits in the title does not change its ranking.

      Tags

      Thirteen tags, used well.

      • Use all 13, as multi-word phrases, with variety.
      • Skip near-duplicates. Etsy matches root words, so phone case and phone cases count as one.
      • Don't repeat your category or attributes as tags. They already work like tags; a longer phrase that contains them is fine.
      • No deliberate misspellings, and use your shop's language.
      • Add synonyms and long phrases buyers type, including regional words.
      • Gift and buyer terms belong in tags when no attribute covers them.

Sources: Etsy's Keywords 101 and tags pages. Etsy's current pages give no rule either way on repeating title words in tags.

      Beyond tags

      What else Etsy search reads.

Etsy search matches a query against the whole listing: title, tags, attributes, category, description, the first photo and reviews. Then it ranks the matches, using listing quality, shop quality, customer service and how well listings convert.

So fill every relevant attribute, pick the most specific category, and start the description with what the item is, with keywords in the first few sentences and without copying the title. Etsy's search guidance has the details.

      Let the AI write them

Titles and tags, written for every listing.

Shop Pilot's AI writes the title, 13 tags and description for the designs in each listing, in the writing style you set for your shop: how titles are built, how many tags and hashtags to use, words to avoid and words to always include. You can read and change the copy before anything goes to Etsy.

Live listings need fixing? Bulk Edit adds, removes or renames tags on many listings at once, and its preview shows any title Etsy would cut short or tag it would reject.

      Questions

      About Etsy titles and tags.

Something else on your mind? Ask us.

How many tags can you have on Etsy?

13 per listing, each up to 20 characters.

How long can an Etsy title be?

Up to 140 characters. Etsy's current guidance suggests fewer than 15 words, with the most important words first, because search engines show only about the first 50 to 60 characters.

What characters are allowed in Etsy tags?

Letters, numbers and spaces. An apostrophe or a hyphen can go inside a tag, but not as its first character. Accented letters are fine.

Which characters can I use in an Etsy title?

Letters, numbers, punctuation, math symbols and spaces, plus the trademark, copyright and registered signs. Each of %, :, & and + can be used only once.

Should I use all 13 tags?

Yes. Etsy recommends using all 13, as multi-word phrases with some variety.

Should my tags repeat words from my title?

Etsy's current pages give no rule either way. What Etsy does advise: no near-duplicate tags, no tags that only repeat your category or attributes, and phrases buyers actually search for.

Do plurals matter in Etsy tags?

No. Etsy matches root words, so a singular and a plural tag count as the same.

      Are one-word tags bad?

Etsy recommends multi-word phrases. A specific phrase such as van gogh phone case tells search more than a single word.

      Can I change a listing's title later?

Yes, but the listing's web address is set from the title when it is first published and does not change afterwards.

Can Shop Pilot write titles and tags for me?

Yes. Shop Pilot's AI writes the title, 13 tags and description for the designs in each listing, in your shop's writing style. See Etsy listing automation.
