Automated mockup generation for print-on-demand shops

Mockups are the most repeated manual step in a print-on-demand listing workflow, and the one where small placement errors are most visible to buyers.

For a print-on-demand shop, the product photo is the product as far as a browsing buyer is concerned. Nobody sees the source artwork. They see the design sitting on the object, and they judge the shop on how convincing that looks.

Why does naive mockup placement fail?

Because real products have geometry that a centred paste ignores. Compositing a design onto a product photo sounds like a one-line image operation, and for a flat product it nearly is. On a phone case the camera cut-out occupies a large, irregular region near one corner. A design centred without regard for it will have its focal point sliced by a hole, or will sit visibly off-balance once the cut-out is accounted for.

The second failure is edges. Artwork scaled to fit inside the case outline leaves bare borders that read as a printing error rather than a design choice.

Camera-safe automatic placement

Shop Pilot’s auto-prep treats the camera zone as protected. Designs are fitted to the case so the artwork clears the camera region, while the background extends to fill the surround rather than stopping short. The seller does not position anything per design; the placement rules apply across the batch. For a phone case listing that batch is 17 photos, each one shown on the phone case mockups page.

Posters work differently: one design per listing, placed into room scenes rather than onto a case, with every print size in the same listing. The poster mockups page covers that flow.

Because output size is locked during design prep, every image in a run shares consistent dimensions — which is what makes a shop’s listing grid look deliberate instead of assembled piecemeal.

Backgrounds as presets

Mockup backgrounds are swappable against saved presets. This separates two things that manual workflows tend to fuse: the design, and the styling of the scene it sits in. A seasonal restyle of an existing catalogue becomes a background swap rather than a full regeneration.

Where does mockup generation sit in a run?

Mockup generation is the second of four stages, after design prep and before listing copy. The images it produces are attached to the Etsy draft in the final stage, so mockups and the title, tags, and description describing them are generated in the same pass. The full sequence is described in how Shop Pilot turns a product folder into a published Etsy listing.

The editor, when automation is not enough

Automatic placement covers the repetitive majority. For the cases it does not, a built-in browser-based editor handles manual adjustment — no Photoshop licence, and no round-trip out of the tool and back.
